MAC in Lillyland Collection Spring 2010

MAC in Lillyland Collection Spring 2010

MAC in Lillyland Collection Spring 2010

Who is Lilly Pulitzer? While working at her juice stand in Palm Beach, she became tired of trying to get the juice stains out of her dress, so she asked her dressmaker to design a sleeveless shift dress made of bright colors and patterns on cotton material. The dress became her trademark and became what is now the classic shift dress. Jackie Kennedy was one of the first celebs to wear Lilly’s dresses … and well, the rest is history.

This new MAC in Lillyland collection is a ” collaboration that feels like the best tongue-in-chic resort retort delivers that joyously bright and refined Key West bloom: new floral patterned Pearlmatte Eye Shadow and Face Powder, plus all the retro-modern colour combinations that Lilly is famous for.”

Check out LillyPulitzer.com for more info and inspiration! (and shop her designs!)
Lillyland Pearlmate Eyeshadow
The Pearlmate Eye shadow ($19.50) is a powder Eye Shadow in which matte and pearlized shades combine to produce a soft pearl-highlight finish. In this limited edition, three complementary shades form a floral motif inspired by the signature patterns of Lilly Pulitizer.

The Pearlmate Face Powder ($27.00) is a pressed powder in which matte and pearlized shades combine to produce a soft pearl-highlight finish. In this special limited-edition design, four complementary shades form a floral motif inspired by the signature patterns of Lilly Pulitizer.

As I am still pondering the possibilities of a New Year’s Eve makeup tutorial look (I’m thinking lots of sparkly stuff), I came across a new MAC Cosmetics collection list, and some of this stuff looks pretty cool.

MAC Studio Fix Lash Mascara

For the mascara fans, MAC has a new one called Studio Fix Lash Mascara! ($13) The wand looks a lot like the Cover Girl Lash Blast Length wand, dontcha think? I can’t get a good enough look at the puny pic, but I want to check this one out in person for sure.

MAC Love Lace Collection 2009

Love Lace

I looooove lace. Obviously MAC loooves lace, too. The new MAC Love Lace collection is all about muted blues, whites, a nude lip with some type of black lacey clothing or accessory to compliment it. About 4 or 5 years ago, I attended a MAC pro demonstration on how to apply lace to the eyes with lash glue. It was quite cool, but when I tried it at home, the lace hurt my eyes.. I guess I’ll have to try it again. Experiement around with it, it’s really easy to apply, just getting used to feeling it on your skin is the hard part.

MAC Love Lace Face Chart

MAC Love Lace Limited Edition Color:

Eyeshadow: Pincurl a dusty white frost , Hypnotizing greyed mauve frost, Love Lace a frosted mid-tone grey/blue (Veluxe Pearl), Suave Intentions a light frosted silver blue.

Eyeliner: Sense of Style a black marine blue, Raven an intense red with black pearl.

Lipstick: Intricate a frosty cool icey taupe.

Lipglass: Icescape a sheer pale pink with pink pearl, Utterly Discrete a sheer frosted cool icy mauve.

Nail Lacquer: Light Affair a creamy pale grey taupe.

I’ve heard of comfort food, but comfort cosmetics? I can believe it! Just as a nice warm bowl of steaming chili can make me feel all cuddly inside, so can a new lipgloss or blush. Call me crazy. The new MAC collection, Warm & Cozy has some lovely deep browns, some snuggly neutrals and once I get paid.. this stuff is going to be shipped. I am always looking for good browns!

MAC Warm and Cozy Face Chart

Sheesh, we haven’t even opened our holiday gifts yet and already I have the 2010 MAC Cosmetics Trend Report for Spring & Summer. I was actually a little turned off by the whole introductory description of it, but I guess I need some pictures to prove that it’s something to get excited about.

The “Anti-Glamour” season is coming… does that sound depressing or what?

From MACPro.com:
Of difference: we’re at a moment in beauty when identikit perfection looks positively passé. Touching on tribal elements with striking originality (underground society), taking a couture approach to nude makeup (pale ‘n’ dandy), feeling the heat of a carefree, sun-warmed vibe (american nomad) or getting creative with the murano-glass palette being passed about (dye-a-tribe) feels eminently more interesting and appropriate. “The essential point with makeup this season is that it’s about projecting emotion and attitude, about not looking the same as everyone else,” explains Terry Barber.

Gorgeousness of last season has been replaced by marks of urban grooming and freshness; or, of making one unexpected, attitude-projecting beauty statement that employs striking colour and construct to a punchy end. On both counts, the quieter leaders of individuality are important in showing us what’s to come: a mascara-less lash and the ubiquity of a bleached brow both emphasize the features, planes and shadows of the face to instantly underscore its uniqueness. “It’s definitely an anti-glamour season,” confirms Gordon Espinet. Bring on the tribal gathering!

All I could think of is that we are all going to end up looking like bleached out like Tilda Swinton (Narnia). No mascara? Bleached brows? How can this be cute?

Look #1: Underground Society (AKA: The Cullens? Seriously. This is Edward Cullen meets Courtney Love) It’s all about not looking cute.. it’s about expressing individuality by being a minimalist. What if my individuality is multi-faceted..and being cute?

MAC Spring 2010 LookMAC Spring 2010 Look

MACPro.com Description: An aerodynamically misplaced streak of liner. A lip packed in Pigment or duo-chromatically constructed…a hardass brow. “It’s more of an attempt to project an attitude of individuality and a sense of ownership than about looking gorgeous in any traditional sense,” explains Terry Barber.

Quotes
Gordon Espinet “These makeups are all about one element on the face. Rather than defining the features, it’s almost more about the product being an accent on a practically naked face… it’s minimal makeup, maximum impact, and definitely with an edge.”

Look #2 : Pale N’ Dandy. Wake up and do nothing. Just walk out the door, I guess.

2010 MAC Spring LookMAC Spring 2010 Look

From MACPro.com: Take bleach to your brows… (Ok.. people at home reading.. I caution you.. do NOT bleach your freaking brows unless you have experience doing this. Go to a salon if you really want to do this!)
Or pull them into distinctive focus. A brow, or distinct lack of one, is essential on this season’s uncomplicated face…sit them on skin that’s under-refined yet ultra-alive with gloss and light-reflective textures…ensure your lips are fresh and free of colour…leave lashes bare. Such are the touchstones of this season’s über-nude look. Yet, there’s nothing alien or odd about this pallor. Pulling reference points from English aristocracy and portraiture to grooming on the verge of grunge, this girl is tough, urban and consciously plays with a certain androgynously sensual beauty. (Did I NOT say Tilda Swinton like ten times already?) She doesn’t care a lot, but she cares enough, and minimal amounts of makeup upgrade what’s naturally there. It’s a look brought to life by the dominance of shine-enhancing textures. “It’s about pale with a texture to it,” says Gordon Espinet. Hydrated and bathed in light, this skincare-effect makeup is low-level languid for the most enigmatic feel. “It adds a vulnerability and openness to the face,” says lyne desnoyers.

Tiffany Johnston “Gloss texture on the eye and brushed through the brow is officially the most popular product of the season.”

Look #3: American Nomad. I’m loving the whole beach girl Chapsticked lips look with the gold eye. Very Brooke Shields in Blue Lagoon.

MAC 2010 Spring LookMAC 2010 Spring Look

From MACPro.com: Surfer girls after a day at the beach…
California tans in shades of dusty sands…Peter Lindberg meets West Coast hippie: this summer’s girl has eased up on her spf 50 obsession and faced the elements for a dusky tan. “It almost seems like a non-beach tan…more like she’s been stuck in the desert for a day,” says Gordon Espinet. So she’s got a relaxed athleticism that’s all about skin and sport; a play on boyish bravado with a tawny, tan cheek. It’s about going lo-fi with high-tech products to achieve the most translucently youthful and health-pumped finish possible. Get laid back, soak in the sun-warmed vibe, and think “discreet and effortless” with the season’s gentle take on bronze…

Quotes
Charlotte Tilbury “It’s healthy, honeyed, recession-proof makeup…Sports Illustrated ’80s icons and gorgeous athleticism.”

Mac 2010 Spring Eye LookMAC Spring 2010 Look

From MACPro.com: Natural is a built beauty for A/W09. After seasons where a more scrubbed, virginal pure complexion stood at the fore, what looks new for naturalness now is a distinctly constructed, considered forming of the face. In terms of effect, think ‘surgery’ without the ‘plastic’, but regards technique this is sculpting, highlighting and contouring at its most advanced.
“Highlighting and contouring is seriously back – it’s all about those old Eighties techniques and tricks that makeup artists used before retouching…I’m doing a lot of triangular shapes to contour and thinking about contrasts between matte and shimmer and light versus dark,” declares Charlotte Tilbury. “It’s punk couture,” adds Tilbury, who was also feeling “lots of burnished reds and coppers – offbeat Eighties colours, super super blended,” she stressed. And make that blending professional, please. “This is photoshopping, pre-photoshop,” says Val Garland, commanding that “it’s not finger makeup, it’s brush makeup.”

Quotes
Val Garland “We don’t live in a photoshop world so we need to use technique to get there: the more blending you can do on contours the less literally Eighties they’ll be. Use brushes, and don’t buy cheap, buy well.”
Charlotte Tilbury “It’s recreating that feel of ‘80s album cover beauty.”

MAC Cosmetics Baroque Boudoir Collection 2009

I thought I was going to get a break from buying more cosmetics until the new year.. looks like I need to pull out my wallet for ONE more last haul that is, in my opinion, the most gorgeous packaging I’ve seen in a really long time.

MAC Baroque Boudoir Collection

It’s the new MAC Baroque Boudoir collection for 2009. MAC, you are killin’ me with this collection! I thought the holiday collection was enough? Ughhh.

I a huge fan of Victorian, Baroque, Edwardian, Art Deco, etc. artwork, and the design on these cosmetics matches the design on my bathroom towels! Of course, you have to remember you are most likely going to throw away the beautiful box, so I try not to look at the lovely design that will eventually be trash.. but the design on the cosmetics themselves is SOOO gorgeous!

Keep an eye out for fake MAC palettes and pigments!

This may be old news to some of you, but I am still seeing a growing trend with fake MAC cosmetics being sold on Ebay, Facebook, and other online markets. If you see a palette, a brush or pigments with too good to be true prices, there is a possibility that it’s fake. The only way to ensure you are getting 100% real MAC products is to buy directly from MAC. I did a little digging and found a few guides on how to spot fakes. Here are a few tidbits to help you if you do decide to purchase online from Ebay or from a seller on a forum, etc. Source:http://reviews.ebay.com/MAC-PIGMENTS-HOW-TO-SPOT-FAKES-by-EXPERIENCED-SELLER_W0QQugidZ10000000002016410

(I personally do not purchase MAC from Ebay, so these tips do not reflect my practices, but only posted here to help those that do)

1. Check for typos on the box. MAC would never have a typo on their boxes, or on the inside instructional pamphlet. I’ve noticed several knock-off items, such as D & G sunglasses, have typos in the owner’s manual. (some limited edition pigments do not have the instructional paper)

2. Fake boxes, when scratched with fingernail, leave marks. Almost like the black of the paper is painted on. Pigment lids are a matte black, just like other MAC product packaging, there is usually a sparkly, recycled look to the plastic, but it’s normally not shiny, unless there is a special, limited edition product with special packaging.

3. Full size, fake pigments are being sold in Hong Kong and other countries. Some of these fake auctions show a lot of pigments colors at very low prices and allow you to choose what colors you want. When you apply the fake pigments to the skin, they will fall right off and are low quality. Some of the fake pigments are getting a little better in quality and texture, and it may be hard to spot the difference. Sometimes the MAC pro stores will sample out pigment colors in full-size jars, but they will not give you an entirely full sample. Some fake sellers will say that their pigment is a store sample, even though it’s full to the top. The MAC sample jars will most likely say “sample” somewhere on it and have the color written on it.

4. MAC is now printing the name of the color and UPC code on the box itself. You may find that some genuine MAC pigments still do have the color name sticker on the right edge at the back of the box (on the very top of the box). Always check the bottom of the pigment jar, the color name silver or clear sticker of a genuine MAC product will always be at the bottom!

5. The fake seller’s have a similar scheme. The seller could buy and sell genuine pigments and generate enough positive feedback to give them a “good” standing with ebay. Once they have 20 or 30 good feedback ratings, the sellers will sometimes then start selling fake products. A lot of these sellers will claim to have a lot of “rare” pigment colors.

6. Use PayPal when purchasing cosmetics on Ebay. PayPal protects your purchases if you have proof. If you find out you bought a fake product, you may file a complaint and receive your money back if the product is verified as fake by MAC. Also, be sure to report the fake products to Ebay so that they can review the account and possibly suspend the account. If you take the product into a MAC store, do not say that you purchased it on Ebay, or they will most likely tell you it’s fake no matter what. Just tell them that you got it as a gift.

7. Some real pigments are not full to the top! I noticed that a lot of my MAC store purchased pigments are not full all the way to the top. This is normal. I actually have seen a MAC employee sample a pigment right out of a jar that was for sale, and put it back into the drawer.. naughty naughty! Again, if you have questions about the amount of pigment you received in a jar you purchased on Ebay, be sure to NOT mention that it was from Ebay!

Here is also a video of examples of fake MAC pigments:

There are several videos and websites/blogs that talk about fake MAC products, and the fakes are changing all the time, so, again, if you want MAC.. then buy FROM MAC.

I have also seen people selling Coastal Scents eyeshadow palettes and selling them as MAC palettes. Here are some photos of those Coastal Scents palettes: http://www.coastalscents.com/cfwebstore/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=122

Happy shopping, everyone! Don’t buy fakes!

Update: I just found another fake MAC website. This store sells all entirely fake MAC products. http://www.brush111.com/index.html Again, these products look exactly like Coastal Scents palettes set into another palette.

Lazy Gaga, you say? Well, I didn’t get up til noon today and I am tired.. but I still did a tutorial based on Lady Gaga’s makeup style. I am not a fan of her music, and I am not buying into her persona, but a lot of people have inquired about her makeup style, and a lot of people have asked me how to apply loose glitter on the eyes. I figured I’d kill two birds with one lipgloss.

Diorskin Mineral Powder - Jane Iredale - Dream Liquid Mousse Foundation - MAC Bronzer

Since I am lazy today, I am not really going to post AGAIN how to put on foundation. I have posted it in other tutorials (see Tutorials on the bottom left menu) and you can check those for reference.

I put two drops of Jane Iredale Liquid Minerals foundatin and two drops of Maybelline Dream Liquid Mousse foundation on my 180 MAC flat top foundation brush. I buffed the foundation on and applied a light layer of Diorskin Mineral powder with my Bare Escentuals Handy Buki brush. I then applied a heavy layer of MAC shimmer bronzer to the length of my cheek bone, and a light layer on the sides of my nose to create a slimming effect.

Face with only foundation

MAC Select Cover-Up in Pink

I really wanted to create a brightening effect around the eyes, so I grabbed my MAC Select Cover-up in pink and my Benefit Cosmetics synthetic foundation brush. I use a brush big enough to cover the whole eye area and underneath the eye.

MAC Select Cover-up in Pink

I applied MAC Showstopper on my brows, which really won’t be seen since my bangs will be covering them. I applied MAC Select Cover-up to the whole eye area, and below the eye down into the cheek area. If you get a little bit of the concealer over your bronzer, you can wait til it dries and apply a more bronzer.

Craft Glitter used on the eyes

I bought some craft glitter on ebay from a seller in London. I originally purchased this set for use with gel nails, which you will see pictures of the stars in my nails later on in this tutorial. I nearly had to arm wrestle the “nail technician” in order to have this done. It’s not like it was difficult!!

Lavender Glitter on the eyes

I chose the light lavender glitter for this tutorial. You can probably find glitter like this at Michael’s craft store, it’s very fine and not too chunky. There are several ways to get loose glitter to stick to your eye. I’ve heard of people using mixing mediums by theatrical makeup brands, and those might work well, but I’ve been to MAC master classes before and the makeup artist there used eyelash glue to apply most of his sequins, lace and other craft-type objects to the eye or around the eye. Since we know eyelash glue is safe to use around the eye, I always use it to apply glitter.

Mark cosmetics concealer brush

Mark Cosmetics Logo

Since I sell Mark. Cosmetics, I’ve had the pleasure of trying the brushes. LOVE THEM. I love the mini concealer brush. See the logo above?? Click that link to go to the Mark. website and write in the search box “Concealer Brush” and get that brush!! It’s only $6, but it works really well for applying concealer and especially good for applying the glitter. (SEE MY AWESOME NAILS??)

To apply the glitter: I put a dab of the eyelash glue on the back of my hand, dumped out a little pile of the glitter next to it and blended it together with the concealer brush. I applied VERY thin layers of the glitter glue mixture to the bottom lid only and dried my eyelids with a cool hair dryer in between each layer with my EYES CLOSED while lifting my eyebrows up to stretch the skin. You should only need about two or three layers. Your eyes should feel stiff, and a little uncomfortable at this point. Eventually you will get used to the feeling.

NARS Angle Eyeshadow brush

Another cool brush that I just purchased at Nordstrom is the NARS angled eyeshadow brush. I had to mail order it since they were sold out. This is a high quality natural brush which is perfect for getting that angled edge on your crease.

Medical Tape Eyeshadow, Glitter

I applied the medical tape to the side of my eye, just like in the Medical Tape Tutorial. Angling the NARS brush with the longer side of the bristles pointing downward, I dabbed MAC Sketch eyeshadow in the crease and in a windshield wiper motion, went back and forth, blending the crease in.

Benefit Cosmetics Merengue Show-Off Loose Eyeshadow

For under the under brow highlight, I used a limited edition Benefit Cosmetics Merengue Show-Off Loose Eyeshadow that was from a holiday kit. This shadow is extremely hard to find and it is not like the original Merengue eyeshadow that Benefit sold for years. This shadow is a crystal white shimmery shadow, you might be able to find a MAC Pigment or Bare Escentuals shadow similar to this.

Glitter Eyeshadow Tutorial

I applied the loose eyeshadow WET under my brow to get the maximum pigment intensity.

I peeled the tape off … but I felt like I needed more..

Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner

I applied Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner and extended it out and up like shown in the picture.

Bobbi Brown Gel Eyeliner - MAC Carbon Eyeshadow

It can be quite difficult to apply eyeliner over the glitter since it creates a hard texture. I think liquid eyeliner works pretty good over glitter, but I was too lazy to look for it, so I used what I found, which was the gel liner. I applied MAC Carbon eyeshadow over the top of the liner to give it a more blended look. If you screw up, you can use a q-tip to reshape the edge of your liner.

MAC Pinkie Pencil - Maybelline Lash Stylist

I am going a little faster here, sorry if I am confusing anyone. I applied the gel liner to the inner rims and applied two coats of Maybelline Lash Stylist to the top and bottom lashes. I concentrated on the bottom lashes this time. I did not choose to use false lashes, too tired at this point, but you can if you want to!

I used MAC Pro Pinkie pencil, which is a matte neon pink lip and eye pencil, on my lips and I drew a line under my eye area right below my inner rim.

YSL Rouge Pur Lipstick #22

I applied one of my favorite all-time lipsticks, YSL Rouge Pur Lipstick #22, over the top of the MAC lipliner. This color is perfect for that pale mod lip look.

YSL Lipstick and MAC Lip Varnish in Polish Me Pink

After I applied the YSL lipstick, I felt like I needed some gloss. I grabbed my neon pink MAC Lip Varnish in Polish Me Pink.

MAC Cool Pink Pigment

I used MAC Pigment in Cool Pink, which is a really nice matte color, to my cheeks. I use this very sparingly since it is heavily pigmented.
