My signature makeup routine for 2016

Krista Robyn's signature makeup routineClients always ask me about my makeup look–which I always welcome–because I am here to share the knowledge and love that I have for cosmetics. Of course, you will be overwhelmed by the amount (and price) of these products, and I always tell my clients that they don’t have to buy everything in one swoop. Buying a few pieces per month until you complete the makeup wardrobe of your dreams is the best way to go

YOUR SKIN is the most important factor when it comes to the way your makeup looks on your face. A bumpy texture on your skin cannot be covered with concealer. Large pores are still going to be visible no matter what “pore reducing” primer you use. Dehydrated skin is going to show fine lines and rough textures. Beautiful skin is going to boost your confidence and your makeup will blend flawlessly to enhance the great skin you already own. See my post on my current skincare routine to find out more about what I love to use and what changed my skin.

PREPPING YOUR FACE FOR FOUNDATION is pretty important for a smooth finish. After my last step of applying moisturizer, I apply the YSL Touche Eclat Blur Primer very sparingly on my entire face and neck. Using a beautyblender (slightly damp..almost dry) I apply my La Prairie Skin Caviar concealer on the parts of my face that are red. Then, using the Caviar foundation, I apply one coat of product to my entire face and neck. This is a beautiful foundation that leaves a satin finish, and also helps your skin stay healthy and smooth with added firming benefits and SPF 15. Since I do prefer a matte finish and oil control, I blot the Laura Mercier Mineral Pressed Powder on top. Powder helps prevent that pesky oxidization that occurs on oily and combo skin.

Kevyn Aucoin The Creamy GlowCONTOURING is a talent. You guys say the Kardashians have no talent…well… they pretty much have slayed the contouring game. Sales have skyrocketed for contouring palettes thanks to this family. While it may not be for everybody, I will have to warn that not every product is going to work either. It took me several purchases and formulas before I found the right shade of contouring brown that worked for me. I use the Kevyn Aucoin Creamy Glow duo for all of my highlight and sculpting needs. The contour color is a cool brown–no orange tones–and creates a natural-looking cheekbone contour, nose contour, and double chin camo. I simply dip my new e.l.f. Contour Brush (AMAZING for $6) into the contour color and apply it to the areas that I want to “recede”. With this amazing brush, you can “stamp” the contour color on and then blend it using the brush. You can blend with the beautyblender if you wish, but the e.l.f. brush works just as good to help blend out your contour into a natural finish.

I always dust a light layer of bronzer on top of my cream contour. This helps bring a little warmth into my look (since I like to look tan) and increases the staying power of my cream contour. I love the bareminerals “Ready” Powder Bronzer in The High Dive to deepen and set my contour, and to place along my forehead line to make my forehead look smaller (and tan!).

HIGHLIGHTING is my favorite part. I own many highlighting products, but I always seem to reach for the Kevyn Aucoin “The Celestial” Powder. Using the lovely Charlotte Tilbury Powder & Sculpt Brush, I apply the highlighter across my forehead, down my nose, on my cupid’s bow, on my chin, and along my jawline right below my contour. I save the cheekbone highlighting for last after I’ve applied my blush. The contour and highlight aid to the left here shows how I would typically use my highlight and contour products, except I do not use it on my eyes.

Once all of my contour and highlighting is done, I start working from the eyes down.

Charlotte Tilbury Vintage VampTHE EYES are my best asset. I treat them kindly. I always start out with an eyeshadow base. I use a few favorites: I love the NARS Pro Prime Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Base and the Wet n Wild Photo Focus Eyeshadow Primer. I lay that down on the entire lid, all the way under my eyebrow. Once that is set, I am ready for eyeshadow. My favorite eyeshadow palette right now is the Charlotte Tilbury Vintage Vamp Luxury Palette. The warm burgundy shades look great on most people, which makes this one easy to work with. I pat the lightest beige shade on my bottom lid first. Then, using the top right burgundy shade, I apply it to my crease with my e.l.f. Crease Brush ($1 –insane), and blend that out with my MAC 224 Tapered Blending Brush (a must-have for any brush kit). I repeat the same process using MAC Carbon eyeshadow (black), but I do not blend it out as far as I did the first Charlotte Tilbury color. I want to keep the black within the crease area. I dampen a flat eyeshadow brush (like this Vincent Longo brush here) and swipe it across the very glitzy bottom left color in the Charlotte Tilbury palette. This shimmery peach color looks very unique, sexy, sultry.. you get where I’m going with this? I pat that color on top of my lid where I applied the lightest color. You should now have a shimmery peach lid, with a burgundy and black crease.

KISS Hollywood LashesNext, I work on my top lid’s eyeliner look. I usually go for a very black liquid liner like YSL Eyeliner Noir Liquid Liner. I love my feline flick look, so I start from the outer wings first and work my way in. Practice makes perfect.. and it’s taken me years to really perfect my winged liner. Don’t get discouraged! Just practice!

On my lower inner rim of my eyes, I line it with the very fabulous Burberry Effortless Kohl Eyeliner in Jet Black. This eyeliner will NOT move, fade, or irritate your eyes. I quickly pick up my e.l.f. Crease Brush and dip it into the darkest shade in the Charlotte Tilbury palette and smudge the color right under my lower lash line. I throw on a coat of YSL Volume Effet Faux Cils Shocking Mascara in Pure Black on top and bottom lashes. My latest lash craze is the KISS brand i-envy lashes in Hollywood 02. These lashes really give your eyes a dramatic feline look and side flare.

Anastasia Brow DefinerEYEBROWS are the window frames of the soul. My all-time favorite eyebrow pencil is the Anastasia Brow Definer Pencil in Auburn. This creamy pencil works a lot better than Brow Wiz. Most of my Brow Wiz customers convert this pencil to get a thicker brow look. I love how the product glides on, and it is a little sheer — take caution — those with darker and thicker brow hairs who wish to expand their brows will find that this product is not opaque enough to blend with your natural brow. You will be better off with Anastasia Dip Brow (with an angled brush), or if you prefer a pencil, the Lancome Le Crayon Poudre is a great pencil for those who like the ease of a pencil, but the finish of a highly pigmented powder.

To finish off the look, I use a pen concealer like the Charlotte Tilbury “The Retoucher” in color #1 Fair right under the brow to highlight and perfect.

THE CHEEKS are ready for blush and highlighter. One of my most favorite blushes is the Kevyn Aucoin Pure Powder Glow in Dolline. It is a highly pigmented pressed blush in a peachy nude color. I wear it daily! Going back to my Charlotte Tilbury Sculpting Brush, I dip into the first highlighting powder I mentioned above and dust across the highest point of each cheekbone. I look like a glowing goddess of peach!

The LIPS must be noticeable, yet understated. I line my lips with the OCC lip liner in Trick (a taupe-nude brown). I apply one of my favorite liquid lipsticks Milkshake from Anastasia. Normally I pat the liquid lipstick with my finger until it dries. Then, I top the lips with a gloss, like MAC’s Clear Lipglass tube.

Are we done yet? Yup! I am all finished with my signature look. I love the nude look for spring and summer, and then in the fall, I just adjust my lipcolor to a darker burgundy or brown. If you want to purchase any of the Nordstrom products, please email me at and I can help you place your order with special skincare samples.

Take care and happy beautifying!
