Without a paycheck for the past week, I’ve been feeling the pinch. Ow! It hurts. My lifestyle has changed so dramatically.. I can’t go for mani-pedis for a while, my nails look totally white trash and I need a fill BADLY. In the meanwhile, (while I am waiting for unemployment checks) I have a little cash to get a few goodies here and there. I dug around for some deals that I’d like to share with you!

Cosmetics Under 10 bucks

Yess! If there is a bargain brand I can stand behind, it is Mark. cosmetics. Glosses are amazing, lipstick feels divine, and those hook ups… so convenient! For cosmetics under $7 a pop, you can’t go wrong!

Drugstore.com coupon for Skin Care

I am starting to turn towards drug store skincare, like Nivea and Neutrogena. This might be a good chance to try a new makeup remover or sunblock. Get $5 off your $25 of skincare products at drugstore.com.

Free Two Faced Lip Gloss

FREE?? Did you say FREE lip gloss??? Wow. I like free stuff, especially when it’s makeup. Although the above offer is possibly over (I got it in my email, but I can’t find it on the site) but beauty.com has great samples and free gifts all the time. I suggest signing up for emails because they seem to have coupons and free gifts at least once per week.

This was a really long weekend, full of events and surprises (to say the least!)

My fiance Steve and I went to see the NINJA show which was Nine Inch Nails and Jane’s Addiction at the Shoreline Ampitheater in Mountain View. The old goth girl in me had to sport some rockin’ goth makeup and hair.. turns out I was one of the rare few that looked like Downward Spiral fans.

For my look, I put a little bit of a modern twist on an old goth fave.. the red, smokey eye. First of all, I did a bit of a goth no-no and used the Lindsay Lohan Sevin Nyne tanning mist: I thought I shook the spray can enough.. but I did not. The spray came out in huge globby bubbles that were brown and stained my skin like big freckles all over my arms. The product instructions say to not rub the product into the skin, but I really had to do something, and fast! I took a wash rag and blotted the product as I moved along my whole body, kind of like when you use a faux finish paint on your walls. So I would spray, then pat it with the wash rag, which eventually got damp with the product and it started working really good. It was very light in color, but the product developed quickly, within a few hours I started noticing the color coming in. The product did not have that self-tanner smell, which was nice, it was more like a coconut tanning lotion smell. I have done the salon sunless tanning products before, Mystic Tan, and you could say that Sevin Nyne is very similar. The cool thing about it is that two Mystic Tan sessions are about $40 bucks, and Sevin Nyne runs $35, but you have control of the product and how much you use and can do your own touch-ups. I heard that in one can of Sevin Nyne is about two full body applications. It is Monday and the tan is still here, with no noticable wearing off points on my arms or legs… I applied the tan on Friday afternoon. I am pretty impressed with this product, but a close source of mine told me that the Mystic Tan in a can is really good, too. I’ll have to review that at a later date!!

Goth eye makeup

It was all about eyes this weekend! My red eyeshadow smokey eyes were fun and really did catch some attention at the NIN show.

My goth look for the NIN show

You can’t quite see the Sevin Nyne tanning mist working in this pic, but I promise that I was at least one shade tanner within the first few minutes.

Coastal Scents Green Eye Shadow

For the second look.. worn at my fiance’s band’s show, I went crazy with my new Coastal Scents palette. I used MAC Pure white pigment wet (mistake.. it kept flaking! I am looking for a new matte white primer in a cream form) I used a green shadow on the bottom lid, a dark brown in the crease which I mixed a little bit of matte black on the brush. It did not blend well because the white shadow was so dry it did not allow the shadow shading to blend at all.

Cover Girl Lash Blast Mascara

To add a bit of zing, I added a really cool teal Urban Decay 24/7 gel eyeliner called “Electric” to the waterline. I used my new favorite mascara ( yup.. I have a new fave!!!!) Cover Girl Lash Blast in the orange tube. I accidentally bought the Black formula, not the Very Black, and I noticed a bit of a gray tinge. The tube and comb are huge and my lashes seem longer with this formula than with Maybelline Lash Stylist. I highly recommend trying this mascara!! With a round rubberized wand, it grabbed every lash and blasted it off to Mars.

Ahhh what a weekend!

Bridal makeup varies from culture to culture, but one thing is for sure.. brides want to look their absolute best on their wedding day!! The basics: flawless, glowing skin, long lashes and perfectly arched brows are common elements that all brides want. I am going to show you some beautiful bridal looks, products for that special day and some of my secret tips to make that special day stress-free.

Bridal Makeup Tips

Pre-Wedding Day Tips

4 months prior: If you are having skin issues like pimples or any kind of breakout or rashes, see your dermatologist 4-5 months before your wedding (or even earlier than that!) to give yourself time to get your skin back into good shape. Sometimes skincare regimens and medications take months before you see any results.

3 months prior: Start getting facials. Your first facial may or may not give you any noticable results. In a lot of cases, it will take at least three or four facials before your pores start shrinking and your skin starts to give off that lovely glow. You also need to give your skin a chance to detox and get used to the treatments. Your last facial before your wedding should be about a week before the wedding day. If you are planning to have your makeup done by a professional, please make your appointment as soon as possible for your pre-wedding makeover, at least three months in advance.

Some brides scout out their makeup artist by having a pre-wedding makeover, which usually costs a lot less than the actual wedding day makeup, sometimes it would be free, it all depends on the makeup artist’s or makeup counter’s policy. Some brides also opt to do their own makeup on their wedding day and ask for an instructional makeover where the client will be taught how to do the look on their own. The best thing to do is to schedule your wedding day makeup as soon as you can, you don’t want to risk your favorite makeup artist being busy on your day. You also should call the artist / counter a week in advance to make sure that you are still on the schedule and that your makeup artist still has a job! I’ve seen several terrible things happen, like the schedule getting erased, lost, or brides appointments not even being put down on the calendar. You always need a backup plan just incase your makeup artist disappears.

Here are some pre-wedding day tips for brides:

- At your pre-wedding makeover, make sure the artist writes EVERYTHING down that she used. Face charts come in real handy when you are having your makeup done, because chances are, your makeup artist isn’t going to remember everything they used and how they used it.

MAC Face Chart Example

- Get your brows waxed 3 to 5 days before your wedding day. I also recommend that you start getting your brows waxed regularly, at least 2 months before the wedding, so that you can monitor any redness or reactions prior to the wedding.

- If you decide to get your makeup done by a professional bridal makeup artist (through the internet, etc.) ask to see samples of their work. Most makeup artists should have a portfolio or website that they can share with you before you commit. If you decide to get a makeover at a makeup counter, don’t be afraid to ask how experienced the artist is doing bridal makeup, and just make sure you feel comfortable with who you choose. Make sure to get your pre-makeover appointment!! Make sure the appointment is written down and that you follow-up with your artist 1 to 2 weeks in advance to make sure they are still able to do the service.

- Bring a friend / bridal party member to your pre-wedding makeover. Having a friend or family member take notes during your pre-wedding makeover might be beneficial in case of an emergency. If you are running late to your makeover, or your makeup artist bails out on you, you may have to have a friend or family member, or yourself, do your makeup. (EEEK!) I know this sounds scary, but it’s happened to a lot of brides. You can even have your friend (or yourself) practice the bridal look on you, just in case!!

- If you do decide to do your own makeup, be sure to purchase your products 2 to 3 months in advance so that you have time to practice and perfect your look.

- Buy Bridal magazines for help with looks. Don’t be afraid to bring those magazines with you to your makeup appointments.

Products?? Well, what do you need ? Here are some of my bridal recommendations!

1. For the flawless face: Try out different foundations WITHOUT or very low SPF. It may be hard to find, but but you can do it! The titanium dioxide in foundations can reflect off of the camera flash and make your face look white or shiny. I really like Revlon Colorstay foundation on brides since it only has SPF 6, comes in plenty of shades and two formulas, one for oily-combo skin and normal – dry skin. This foundation is medium coverage, and if you’ve seen my tutorials, you may know that I prefer to put foundation on first before concealer, and just dab where it is needed.. in some cases, the foundation coverage is so good that you don’t need concealer. I may do a bridal makeup tutorial because I am now realizing this blog is going to be very long. A colorless setting powder is good since there is no SPF or shimmer. You def. want to take sample pics of yourself in the makeup to make sure that there is no scary white reflection.

Revlon Colorstay Foundation

2. Eye depuffer gels and light reflecting creams work wonders. I like Benefit Cosmetics Ooh La Lift (available in a handy set with Lip Plump and High Beam & more) and Mark. Cosmetics Bright, Lighten and Depuff gel (only $8). Experiment with highlighters on the cheekbones. Some people have found success mixing liquid highlighters like Benefit Cosmetics High Beam in with their foundation. Carry the depuffer with you to touch up during the day.

Mark. Cosmetics Depuffer Eye Gel

3. Palettes can be your friend. NARS just released a really cute bridal makeup palette, which contains four lovely shadows, the best-selling Orgasm blush and a highlighter, with four lip colors. ($65) The new Chanel Les Naturels de Chanel collection is very “bride friendly” with soft hues and pastels. If you are on a super tight budget, you can create your own palettes at Coastal Scents website: http://www.coastalscents.com/cfwebstore/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=130

4. Waterproof your eyes. I do not like waterproof mascara, if you do, then great! For me, it weakens my lashes, and when I have to remove the mascara, I have to rub extra hard to get it off, which stretches the skin around the eyes. I prefer to use makeup sealants like Benefit Cosmetics She-Laq or cheaper theatrical makeup versions of makeup sealants. Shop around, ask around, use the internet to find one that works for you. You can seal eyeliner, lipstick, mascara and much more, and not have to worry about transferring lips onto your man’s pout during the wedding kiss.

5. Get your brows in shape. I rec. these compact kits by brow specialist Anastasia. Check out the All About Brows Kit at Sephora. You can use that under-brow highlighting stick in the inner and outer corners of your eyes to give yourself a bright-eye look.

Well, guys.. looks like I am due for a tutorial. I have been sick with some type of stomach ailment so I haven’t been quite in the mood to put makeup on.. plus it’s about 90 degrees out. Ughh.. Please come back soon for more bridal makeup tips!!!

I had to do one mini-splurge at Sephora before I headed off into the unemployment wilderness. It was all about tone and complexion for me at this point. I need to look nice for interviews, right?

I ended up buying the Sevin Nyne tanning mist…finally!! There wasn’t a huge display like I had thought there would be since it’s one of the most popular self tanners out there right now. I snatched one up and headed over to see what kind of new foundations were on the market. I am thinking full coverage, but not fakey cakey looking, with natural ingredients.. sound impossible? Not anymore.

Fresh Umbrian Clay Foundation

Introducing Fresh Umbrian Clay Freshface Foundation with SPF 20. ($42 for 1 oz.) This product is new, so don’t think you’ve missed out on anything.. I know.. I was thinking to myself, “Where the hell was I when this came out??”. No worries, it’s now your chance to try this amazing foundation. I usually need to wait a week or two before coming to a final conclusion about a foundation, but so far, this one has delivered superior results.

Here is what Sephora.com has to say about this product:
“A purifying and balancing treatment foundation that refines and hydrates the skin.”

“Fresh Umbrian Clay Freshface Foundation SPF 20 provides natural-looking coverage for a flawless finish. Fresh’s exclusive Umbrian Clay removes impurities from the skin to refine, nourish, and balance the complexion while Porphyridium Cruentum, a micro-algae extract, retains optimal moisture levels throughout the day. Your skin will be left fresh and radiant, with visibly reduced fine lines, noticeably improved skintone, and with SPF 20 UV protection.”

It is formulated without the following harmful ingredients: Parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrances, synthetic dyes, Phthalates.

The foundation just feels very pure and creamy when you are applying it. A little bit goes a very long way, so you don’t need to use so much. Although the description of this product says that it’s medium coverage, I find that it’s very pigmented with a nice, full coverage that doesn’t have you dabbing the concealer on after you’ve applied it.

This foundation may very well have kicked the Revlon Colorstay Foundation out of it’s number one spot on my list. With a full range of shades, I am sure you will find your own. I did mention to the lovely salesperson at Sephora that one of the shades, Seventh Veil, is also a strip club in Hollywood. (Girls, Girls, Girls!!!)

My next tutorial will feature this foundation.. so keep visiting. I might post it up tomorrow.

Megan Fox is flawless

Before I went to Hollywood, I thought to myself, “If I run into Megan Fox, I’ll die. Scream, faint and die.” I went to Hollywood this past weekend with my honey, we planned on seeing the new Stark Trek movie, but we were too tired after going to a musicians conference for 6 hours. I still looked fab, and honestly, I didn’t see any celebs or glamorous people walking around. I think I went a little too far glamming up, but hey.. I still had fun.

What did I bring??? I didn’t get to the mall in time to get Sevin Nyne self tanner, TOTALLY bummed. So here’s the list of stuff I brought to the land of celebs!!

I also wore a half-wig that blended into my hair quite nicely. You def. could not tell it was a wig! I really do think these are a better alternative to salon extensions, and they only take like a few minutes to put in! I bought mine off of ebay! I will put up pics later! I am too tired to do it now.. just stay tuned!!

Dos & Don’ts at the makeup counter

On May 4, 2009, in Cosmetics, Misc., Opinion, by Krista Dior

Makeup Counter at Macy's

I’ve had 5 years experience working at a retail makeup counter, and I know all of the frustrations and woes that a makeup artist can go through when customers are clueless. I am creating this guide using my experiences to help you, the customer, plan a better trip to the makeup counter.. it will help both you and the makeup artist create a better environment for eachother. =)

1. Reasearch! What are your specific needs?

It’s best to get an idea of what you are going in for.. do you need a new foundation? A new shade of lipstick for spring? Or perhaps you are hoping to look like a flawless celebrity… we can dream, right?? Magazines and the internet are great tools for “shopping” for new looks. There is a 99.9% chance that the cosmetic brands you will encounter have a website that lists all available products, new products, and ideas for the upcoming seasons. Don’t be afraid to print out a photo of a celebrity or look that you admire and want to go for. I really loved it when customers brought me photos from magazines and said, “I want to look like this!”. It gave me a clear idea of what the client wanted and it was fun. Now, I am no plastic surgeon, but I am sure with common sense, you will know that a makeup artist isn’t going to totally transform you into Megan Fox.. right? I can most definitely match the lovely coral lipstick that Miss. Fox is wearing and see if it’s a good match for you.

Research the store’s policy. Some makeup counters require a minimum purchase for makeovers.

Also, if you have sensitive skin or have special needs where your face is concerned, please research the brand’s ingredients. If they don’t list anything, then go ahead and shoot them an email to customer service and ask them about their products. I spent hours and hours with clients who would talk about their sensitive skin and would freak out anytime my makeup brush touched their face. After the client had purchased hundreds of dollars worth of makeup, they returned it the next day, saying they itched all over… if you know you are alergic to something, please do check out product ingredients beforehand. It will save you both so much time and hassle.

There are also makeup forums where you can talk to other men and women about specific makeup products, reviews and a lot more. Check out: www.makeuptalk.com
I have been a member of that site for many years and anytime I have a concern or question about particular products, I consult my buddies there!

So once you have a plan.. it’s time to get your wallet and head down to Makeupland!

2. Where should I go? Are there any good places?

Honestly, stick with Nordstroms, Neiman Marcus, and Saks 5th. I haven’t been to Bloomingdale’s makeup counters yet, but you might want to ask around. Places like Sephora and Ulta are good for people who are picking up replacement products or gifts. I like to play with the makeup there, but I am scared of germs (hello, Swine Flu??). I am not trying to deter people from going there, I just think that dealing with a makeup artist that knows everything about one brand is better than dealing with an associate who has very little knowledge about 30 different brands. I find that high-end makeup counters offer the best service and staff knowledgable, courteous people. Don’t be afraid to scope out the counters for your new makeup guru buddy, ask for his or her business card and schedule some one-on-one time so they can get you familiar with the products. I find that Mondays – Tuesdays are the best days to get alone time with your makeup guru. Mornings are probably the best time of day to go. Not only will the makeup artist be refreshed and ready to go in the morning, but they won’t be tired and rundown from a day’s work. I hated end-of-day appointments!!!

3. What can I expect once I get to my appointment?

You can choose to come with a clean face or not. If you are wearing makeup, it’s okay. Just be prepared to remove your own makeup with either makeup removers that are provided by the artist or soaps and cleansers given to you by the artist. I was lucky enough to work near a bathroom with a good sink so that customers could wash everything off before we started.

You better expect to get what YOU want but also be open to the makeup artist’s suggestions. Don’t be bossy or talk about your life stories.. we are not your personal shrink. A makeup artist’s worst nightmare is the scary customer that comes just to talk about their son’s horrific wife, or ex wife.. or any kind of drama. We are there to make money, and time is money. Normally, a makeup artist is only supposed to spend about 30 minutes or less on a client, unless it’s a wedding makeover, then they may be allowed more time with the bride (or an entire bridal party!). I can’t say it enough.. be courteous to your artist and don’t take up too much of their time. They have specific daily goals to meet! Don’t be scared to ask, ” How are we doing on time?” just to check in with your artist to let them know you are aware of time restrictions. If it’s a super slow day, you might get lucky and get to spend a little more time.

As far as what the makeup artist will do, it all depends on the counter. Some counters focus on their color line, like MAC, for instance. Some places focus on their skincare, like Clinique. The artist may use a primer before they apply a foundation, or they may use a moisturizer. Remember to let your artist know ahead of time if you are allergic to something. A total DON’T at a makeup counter is to try a foundation on your hand. What good will that do unless you are a hand model? You must try foundations on the face, or you will not know what it will look like. If you can, try to take a mirror outside to look at it in natural light. This rule also goes for any other makeup ..you are not going to see the true color of the eyeshadow, lipstick, etc. if it’s on your hand. If you absolutely need to test eyeshadow on your hand, make sure to put an eyeshadow primer on your hand to see what the true pigment will look like. Your hand is dry and produces very little or no oil, so everything will look diffferent than if it was on your face.

4. Should I buy everything that the makeup artist shows me?

Only you can be the judge of that. If you already have a foundation that you are happy with at home, then stick with it until you are through using it and come back to purchase the new foundation if you want to try it. There’s no use doubling up on stuff you already have at home. Ask if any of the products that you like are limited edition, because chances are, if the lipgloss you are totally swooning over is limited edition, it will be unavailable for purchase in a few months. Of course, the goal of the makeup associate is for you to buy as much as you possibly can.. so be smart and make sure you buy only the things that you NEED and possibly only one or two “I have to have this or I will die” products. I’ve been in many situations where I know that I don’t need a lipgloss, but it just made me feel like a million bucks, so as long as you can still pay your cable bill, you should be okay. Do not even go near the makeup counter if you are totally low on cash or can only use a credit card. I made the mistake of putting a lot of cosmetics on credit and I am still paying for those mistakes.

TIP: You want it all? You can have it all, but it will take time. Let’s say you loved everything the artist put on you, but there is no way in hell you could afford it. Buying ONE product per week, or every two weeks is the way to collect makeup safely. Eventually, you will get everything you want, but you will have to be patient. Spreading your purchases out is the best way to go if you are hurtin’ for the cash money.

5. What should I do if I don’t like the product?

Sometimes at the makeup counter the customer just nodded “yes” to everything the makeup artist says because they either trusted them too much or they didn’t want to be mean and say that they hated everything. Please.. please speak up if you don’t like the brown lipstick or the overly glittery eyeshadow. The worst thing that happened was a customer who I caught in the bathroom freaking out and crying because they didn’t like the makeup job that I did. Yeah, my feelings were hurt and I felt like I totally wanted to get defensive, but I did not know that the customer didn’t like shimmery products. If the customer told me that they hated shimmer or didn’t like the look, they should have spoken up. They ended up returning all of the products at another counter.. even though the rules at my counter was that you had to purchase $50 in cosmetics to get a makeover in the first place. So not only was the customer not satisfied, but I also lost money that day due to lack of communication. When I do makeup, I normally show the customer what I am doing every step of the way and even ask them if they are sure they want shimmer or matte products. If the artist applies an eyeshadow that you aren’t too crazy about, you can ask to try a different shade or to possibly play up the shade with a contour color in the crease. It can be quite difficult to remove an eyeshadow quickly, so sometimes the artist will put a color over the top of the unwanted color and everything gets muddy looking. Normally, I would wipe away as much shadow color as I could, then re-apply the eyeshadow base or a concealer before continuing on with a new color.

If you must return the product, try to return it to the counter where you bought it and maybe look for replacement products. You can try to reschedule a complimentary makeover with the artist or try a different artist. Please let them know you weren’t too crazy about the look and would like to try something else. Always be nice!! If the makeup artist is being bitchy about the situation, then I advise trying a whole different person or counter, you don’t want to deal with a negative Nancy when trying to update your appearance!!!

6. What if I just didn’t like getting my makeup done by another person and I want to try to learn how to do it on my own?

If all else fails, there’s YouTube. There are many extremely talented makeup artists on YouTube, you will just need to find the one that has a style that best suits your own. A lot of these artist show you how to apply the makeup, but of course, they will not really discuss what colors will suit you or what their suggestions are for you, you will have to experiment with that on your own. Check out magazines and pictures of people with similar coloring to your own. I also would suggest purchasing makeup palettes with various colors you can play with. There is a really cool eyeshadow palette from Coastal Scents, which is a cool website with tons of palettes and ideas: http://www.coastalscents.com/cfwebstore/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=130

7. Once you get the look you want, perfect it!!

Once you figure out what looks good on you, you can practice.. practice and perfect your look. Don’t be afraid to branch out and experiment with things like face shimmer, bronzers and various types of highlighters. I recommend that you try to get facials done regularly so that your makeup will look great on flawless skin. I have recently gone in for microdermabrasion treatments and I follow that with a glycolic peel from Avon every few days. I noticed my pores are reducing in size and that my makeup looks a lot better. I also use an eye cream on a daily basis (I switch from Arcona to Benefit’s Eyecon) and I also use an eye de-puffer in the mornings (Benefit’s Ooh La Lift and Mark Cosmetics Hook up eye de-puffer gel). Just have fun with it, it’s just makeup!!
